AmeriHealth Caritas of North Carolina is one of five managed care organizations selected by NC Medicaid to operate Standard Plans — the integrated physical and behavioral health plans serving most NC Medicaid beneficiaries. AmeriHealth Caritas's ABA coverage operates under the federal EPSDT (Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment) benefit, which requires Medicaid plans to cover medically necessary services for enrollees under 21 — even when those services are not generally part of an adult Medicaid benefit. That protection means AmeriHealth Caritas members do not face the kind of annual dollar caps or hard hour limits that often appear in commercial plans. What matters is medical necessity, documented progress, and a sound BCBA-led treatment plan.

To qualify for ABA therapy under AmeriHealth Caritas NC, your child must meet these clinical and documentation requirements:
Your child must be actively enrolled in the AmeriHealth Caritas NC Standard Plan. If your enrollment is in a different Standard Plan (Healthy Blue, Carolina Complete, UnitedHealthcare, or WellCare), see our main insurance page — we accept all five Standard Plans.
AmeriHealth Caritas requires a current DSM-5 diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ICD-10 F84.0) from a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, developmental pediatrician, or other qualified clinician. If your child does not yet have a diagnosis, we refer you to local diagnosticians who accept AmeriHealth Caritas.
Our BCBAs administer Vineland-3 along with functional behavior assessment and parent interviews to document that ABA is medically necessary. Documentation must show that ABA is the appropriate intervention for your child's specific challenges.
AmeriHealth Caritas requires prior authorization before ABA begins. We submit the complete clinical packet — diagnosis, assessments, treatment plan, authorization forms — through the AmeriHealth provider portal. Reauthorization is required approximately every six months.
